Deze naam is bijzonder populair, je zou bijna zeggen, tot vervelens toe. Waarschijnlijk is dit een naam die veel gebruikt wordt in doopnamen. Daarentegen is de achternaam Commodore een naam dat niet vaak voorkomt.


Betekenis (Etymologie)

Van Lat. patricius `patriciër, patricisch, adellijk'. Heiligennaam: St-Patrick, apostel en schutspatroon van Ierland. Hij werd geb. ca. 367, zijn geboorteplaats is niet zeker. Zijn oorspr. naam zou Succath (`strijder') zijn geweest. Hij slaagde erin Ierland tot het christendom te bekeren; hij zou 365 kerken gesticht hebben. In 440 à 450 stichtte hij het bisdom Armagh. Gest. in Saul bij Downpatrick ca. 468, kerk. feestdag: 17 maart. Er bestaan veel legenden over St.-Patrick, hij werd dan ook de Ierse nationale held. Uit eerbied gebruikten de Ieren aanvankelijk zijn naam niet als doopnaam. In Eng. was dit veel vroeger het geval. Door de Ierse predikers kwam de verering ook al spoedig naar het vasteland. O.i.v. de Ierse missionarissen kwam de naam in Du. eerder op dan hier: Patricius scolasticus Speier, 1103 (Socin); Patritius, Keulen ca. 799 (Littger); oudste voorbeeld in Ndl.: Patricius Hendrik Lindsay (blijkens de familienaam geen Ndl. familie), Utrecht 1754 (Ned. L. 1955, 32); Jacob Patrick Papet, Sommelsdijk 1760 (Ned. L. 1960, 270). Patrick is tegenwoordig populair in Ndl. Zie ook Patricia.
