Gri. `de afweerder der mannen, de beschermer'. Mogelijk echter oorspr. een Hettitische naam: koning Alaksandus, ca. 1300 v. Chr., door volksetymologie later vervormd tot Gri. Alexandros. Vooral bekend door Alexander (III) de Grote, de Macedoniër. In de middeleeuwen is de naam gepopulariseerd door de zgn. Alexanderromans (vgl. de term alexandrijnen, zesvoetige jambische verzen). Ook in het N.T. komt de naam verscheidene malen voor: Alexander en Rufus, zonen van Simon van Cyrene (Marcus 15,21); Alexander, `van het geslacht van de hogepriester' (Hand. 4,6); Alexander, een jood in Efese (Hand. 19,33 e.v.). Heiligennaam o.m.: 1) Alexander, in de 4e eeuw patriarch van Alexandrië, ca. 328; kerk. feestdag: 26 febr.; 2) Alexander I, paus van ca. 105 tot ca. 125; kerk. feestdag: 3 mei. De naam kwam al vroeg in gebruik: Rijnland 1054 (Littger); Alexander, bisschop van Luik, 1128-1135; West-Vla. 12e eeuw; Holl.: 1181. Ook in keizerlijke en koninklijke geslachten was Alexander een geliefde naam, o.a. van Rusland en de middeleeuwse koningen van Schotland: Alexander I, gest. 1124 .
