Betekenis (Etymologie)

Van Gri. hagnos `heilig, zonder schuld, rein, kuis'. De heilige Agnes was martelares in Rome, waarschijnlijk tijdens de vervolgingen van Diocletianus, ca. 304. Door associatie met het Lat. woord agnus `lam' (het lam Gods, Christus) wordt St.-Agnes vaak afgebeeld met een lam; kerk. feestdag: 21 en 28 jan. De naam kwam in het westen al vroeg voor, mede doordat hij in (Fra.) vorstelijke kringen meermalen voorkwam. Dit blijkt ook uit de vele agnietenkloosters in Nederland. Oude voorbeelden zijn: Agnes regina, vrouw van Hendrik III 1045 (Socin); Rijnland 1071 (Littger); in West-Vla. in de 11e eeuw (Leys); Agnes, abdis van Rijnsburg 1205.
